Du Pont Estate Remade with Luxury Homes
Long before millionaire John du Pont murdered an Olympic gold medalist on his vast estate—depicted in the movie “Foxcatcher”—the property was a rolling farm with prizewinning horses.
Now, Toll Brothers is hoping to recapture that earlier glory with a luxury development in the posh horse country west of Philadelphia. The development in Newtown Square, Pa., is permitted for 449 homes on more than 200 acres, amid another 200 acres or so of undeveloped fields and woodland. The company gave an additional 50 undeveloped acres to the township to create a nature preserve.
So far, Toll Brothers has sold 123 homes. Townhomes start in the $600,000s and a 5,000 square-foot, five-bedroom home sells for $1.1 million. A newly restored carriage barn, with a soaring foyer and large stone fireplace, is the centerpiece of a communal area that includes a fitness center, outdoor pool, tennis courts and a separate recreation center.
